Math is taught as an independent subject through whole-class and small-group activities, reinforced with one-to-one instruction. The curriculum is individualized to meet the needs of each student. All math concepts are taught through hands-on activities, and students progress once they master each concept. At all ages, students study the following strands:
- Numbers and Operations
- Algebra
- Geometry
- Data Analysis and Probability
- Measurement
- Problem Solving
Teachers check for comprehension of each math concept through discussion and student demonstration. Students maintain a math portfolio with samples of their work in each of the math strands. A math concepts checklist is used to track student progress throughout the year. The Marilyn
Burns' Math Solutions curricula provides the foundation for mathematical learning.

Mathematics is also integrated into daily classroom life and project work. Activities as diverse as woodworking, gardening, cooking, and field trip planning provide students with opportunities to use math skills in real-life settings. Children learn fractions while cooking, geometry when building, algebra when calculating field trip mileage, and decimals while counting their fundraising proceeds. This real-life framework for understanding mathematical concepts reinforces instruction and opens new avenues for learning.
