Friday Field Trip

On Friday we have a two-hour marine biology class and tour at the new Avila Beach Marine Institute. We need to leave promptly at 9:20 – please don’t bring your children late to school! Children should pack a sack lunch, snack, and water bottle in a small backpack. We will return by 1:30. One driver is still needed!

Conference Day

June 2 is Conference Day, where parents, students, and teachers sit together to review their goals for the student this year and whether they were achieved. There is no school on June 2. Be sure to sign up for a half-hour conference slot on the clipboard in your child’s classroom.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Please keep helping your child to learn their lines and gather their costume together. Athenians need footwear that look like leather sandals. Fairies and goblins: please talk with Dona about costumes.

Props wanted: We need a small wooden table (patio table?) and six wooden folding chairs. If we can borrow a table or any number of chairs, please talk with Becca.

Recycling on Friday

Bring your CRV bottles and cans on Friday to support our school! Remember to rinse containers, take off tops, and sort if you have a lot. Thank you!

Bring Your Recyclables on Wednesday!

Recyclables can be turned in on Wednesday, April 30. Please support the school and bring any CRV beverage containers. Make sure they are washed; lids are removed; and if you have a lot of them, that they are sorted into aluminum, plastic, and glass. Thank you!

Field Trip to Cal Poly

On Friday, we will walk to Fire Ecology Professor Chris Dicus’s lab (Luke’s father) to see a fire tornado recreated indoors (wow!). Afterwards, we will go on to the Cal Poly Arboretum for lunch and an ecology game. We will leave at 10:40 and return by 2:30.

Play Date (whole school)

Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will take place on Thursday, June 5 at 6:00 p.m. Because it is a school night, we will not have a potluck, so we will ask you to feed your child and return them by 5:30.

Aqua Room students invited all willing Golden Eagles students to participate in the play together, so Eagles parents, please mark this date on your calendar. We will be casting the Eagles this week and then sending home lines for them to learn. In about two weeks, we will be asking for help with costumes.

Yogathon Sponsors

Please continue to seek sponsors for your child’s participation in the Yogathon. This is our primary fundraiser this year and will greatly benefit the school. Children can call or email friends and relatives to ask for their support. Remember that sponsors contribute a fixed donation, which the children should collect at the time of pledging. There will be prizes of gift baskets for the children and adult participants who raise the most money through sponsors.

Please encourage people you know to attend the Wellness Fair. Children will especially enjoy the Kid’s Yoga and Games area. Kate has already signed on over 20 vendors for the Wellness Fair, four main sponsors (New Times, HopeDance, Smiling Dog Yoga, and Mind Body Online), and at least six instructors from various yoga studios to lead the sun salutations. Many businesses are donating gift basket and silent auction prizes, so it promises to be quite a day!

Mural Paint Needed

As a whole school, we are planning a mural to paint on the newly-rebuilt handball wall. Our artist-in-residence is working with the children to choose a theme and create a sketch. We will present the sketch to the school district and ask for permission to paint the mural. We are optimistic that it will be approved.

The next step will be to obtain outdoor latex paint. If you have any extra outdoor paint to donate, please talk with Becca. Many colors can be tinted, so we are interested in any colors at this point.

What a Science Fair!

Thank you to everyone who attended the science fair! The glow on the children’s faces as they explained their projects to parents and judges was wonderful to see. They clearly loved the opportunity to share their knowledge and take pride in their work.

Yogathon & Wellness Fair Sponsors

Kate sent home sponsor forms and envelopes for each child. Children should solicit sponsors for their participation in the Yogathon. Note that sponsors contribute a fixed donation, which the children should collect at the time of pledging. There will be prizes of gift baskets for the children and adult participants who raise the most money through sponsors.

If your child cannot attend the actual event, we will have a school yogathon on Friday, May 16 which they can be sponsored for. However, we encourage you and your child to attend the event and help out or participate. We need everyone’s support to make this a successful annual fundraiser.

Poly P Hike on Tuesday for Earth Day

To celebrate Earth Day, we will go for a hike together up to the Poly P. We’ll leave promptly at 9:30, so please don’t send children late! We will return for lunch, but children should pack a small backpack with snacks and a water bottle. Comfortable walking shoes, a jacket, and sunscreen/hat are also recommended.

Last Call for Play Date Conflicts!

In case you missed the announcement last week, the Aqua Room children have decided to perform Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They are tentatively planning the play for Friday, June 6. We need all the children to be able to attend. Please let us know right away if your family has a conflict. Thank you!!

Yogathon & Wellness Fair Fundraiser on May 17

The first annual spring Yogathon and Wellness Fair is being founded and coordinated by Kate Pardeilhan as a fundraiser for Manzanita School. It will take place on Saturday, May 17 from 10-1 at Mitchell Park in SLO. There are many ways that you can help Manzanita School during this event:

* gathering community sponsors for your child or yourself

* stuffing & mailing envelopes, posting flyers

* encouraging yoga students to participate

* donating silent auction and gift basket items

* recruiting vendors or community volunteers

* volunteering your time during the event

The Yogathon will take place on a sectioned grass area, where participants will work towards the goal of completing 108 sun salutations, which takes 2-3 hours. Volunteer yoga instructors will demonstrate and lead the event; beginning to intermediate yoga students are welcome. All participants will be challenged to gather donations from their family, friends & coworkers to support Manzanita School, using sponsorship forms we will supply.

There will be a special children's section for the Yogathon that will include sun salutations, yoga movement, and other fun activities. We hope that as many children as possible will participate in the Yogathon. The sponsor sign-up forms will be available for the children next week. Parents are also welcome to participate in the Yogathon; flyers also come out next week.

There will be a silent auction during the Yogathon. If you have an auction item to donate (valued at $75 or more), or a smaller item for a gift basket, please call Kate at 782-9640. Any donations should be related to the general themes of the event; natural health care, organic products for mind, body & spirit.

Volunteers will be needed that day, and many of the children are interested in helping volunteer. We will have a sign-up sheet next week for volunteers, both adults and children.

The Wellness Fair will consist of booths lining the sidewalks for vendors of natural foods and clothing, yoga and meditation-oriented businesses, alternative health practitioners, natural health and beauty products, and others. Main event sponsors include Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort, Smiling Dog Yoga Studio, MindBody Online, and Hopedance Magazine. If you know of any business or individual who would like to participate in the Wellness Fair as a vendor, with booth space, please pick up an application from Becca or direct them to www.manzanitaslo.org/yogathon.

Thank You, Volunteers!

A big thank you to everyone who brought in recyclables, to Rosie Ashbaugh for redeeming the recyclables and driving all the way to Shell Creek Road to make our wildflower field trip possible, and to each of you who help in the classroom. Your participation makes the quality of our program possible.

SLO Symphony at the PAC

Today, Monday, is our field trip to the symphony at the PAC. Ask your child about what they saw and heard!

No School on April 18

Friday, April 18 is a Teacher Work Day so there will be no school.

Science Fair

Don’t forget – the Science Fair is Thursday, April 17 from 4-6 p.m. Please come see the children’s displays. The children should stay as long as possible to explain their displays to visitors.

Rodeo Ballet at the PAC

The Symphony was our last scheduled performance at the PAC this year, but the Ballet Theater of SLO added a rodeo ballet (yes, western style!) to the music of composer Aaron Copeland. The children wanted to attend, so we added it to our calendar on Friday, April 25 from 10-11. Tickets are $6; to simplify life, the charge will be added to your May bill.
