Nail fungus is a type of fungus that can affect both fingernails and toenails. However, the toenails are affected more often than the fingernails because of the environment socks and shoes provide. Fungi thrives in warm and moist places so a sweaty sock is the perfect place for it to grow. But there are other nail conditions that can mimic the fungal infection symptoms. Therefore, it is important that you learn how to recognize nail fungus symptoms.
When you get a toenail or fingernail fungus the symptoms can be mild, or they may become severe. The first sign of a problem is a change in the color of your nails. This may start at the farthest end of your nails and then work its way inward. They will start to turn yellow, or they may become brown. Occasionally, they will become all white. When the fungus gets beneath the nail it will become difficult to treat because it provides protection for the fungus.
Without treatment, toenail or fingernail fungus symptoms will become more severe. The nails, beds and skin surrounding the area may become very itchy. This presents a problem since you are unable to scratch under the surface area. You should never scratch the skin surrounding the area because this can spread the fungus to other nails.
